ADELINE “Adz” Dumapong, the Philippines’ first paralympic medalist, is the focus of a new short film by GCash. The film highlights her inspiring journey from facing financial and societal challenges to becoming a symbol of hope for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the Philippines.

Born in Kiangan, Ifugao, Dumapong contracted polio at age three, which left her unable to walk. She discovered para-powerlifting through the Philippine Orthopedic Center and qualified for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. Despite financial hurdles, Dumapong was able to secure a bronze medal, marking the Philippines’ first paralympic medal. Over the years, she has won 19 international medals, bringing pride to the nation and highlighting the potential of individuals with disabilities.

Beyond athletics, Dumapong advocates for PWD rights, particularly for para-athletes. As project manager for Women With Disabilities Leap to Social and Economic Progress (WOWLEAP, Inc.), she works on programs promoting inclusivity and economic independence. She states, “Being an athlete with a disability, I thought I knew all the problems of our sector. But through WOWLEAP, I learned more about the needs of the community.”

Inspired by Dumapong’s story, GCash has partnered with the National Council for Disability Affairs (NCDA) to promote an inclusive workplace. They also support WOWLEAP’s programs and have donated wheelchairs to the Philippine Orthopedic Center. Winsley Bangit, GCash’s group head, emphasized the company’s dedication, stating, “Adz’s story embodies our mission of financial inclusion.”

The film serves as a catalyst for broader conversations about inclusion for para-athletes and the PWD community in the Philippines. GCash plans to continue collaborations with organizations dedicated to PWD welfare, aiming to create an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can fully realize their potential.

Dumapong’s journey remains a powerful testament to resilience and the impact of collective support in overcoming adversity.
