In honor of World Ocean Month, Security Bank launched the first phase of Project MITHI (Mangrove-Based Initiatives for Thriving Habitats and Inclusive Communities), planting 940 native mangrove seedlings in Aringay, La Union.
The activity was held in partnership with the Dulao Fishpond and Fishpen Producers Cooperative, Oceanus Conservation, and Communities for Nature.
The project aims to plant 10,000 seedlings to bolster coastal ecosystems and community resilience.
The volunteer-led event brought together over 40 Security Bank employees, in cooperation with the Aringay LGU.
Local officials—including Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) Engr. Rhea Tugade, Cooperative Development Specialist Behilda Miana, and Sangguniang Barangay Member Hon. Ramsey Mangaoang—also participated.
“Project MITHI brings our sustainability vision to life—protecting the environment, supporting livelihoods, and strengthening communities. It reflects Security Bank’s commitment to advancing climate action and enriching lives through measurable impact,” said Eduardo Olbes, EVP and CFO.
“We’re planting three native species—Rhizophora, Lumnitzera, and Avicennia. A diverse mix strengthens mangrove resilience and supports a more stable ecosystem, making the forest less vulnerable to disease and environmental change,” said Camille Rivera-Roa, Director and Co-Founder of Oceanus Conservation, as she highlighted the role of biodiversity in restoration.
Beyond its ecological impact, the initiative supports local livelihoods.
The Dulao Cooperative and Oceanus Conservation will lead ongoing maintenance and monitoring, ensuring both environmental and economic benefits.
Wilfreda Garca, one of the employee volunteers from the Dagupan-Lucao Branch, shared that the experience inspired her to revive mangrove planting in her hometown, where coastal development had displaced native forests.
A tripartite effort among Security Bank, Communities for Nature, and Oceanus Conservation, Project MITHI is designed for long-term impact—through site assessments, species suitability, and survivability planning.
It reinforces the Bank’s broader sustainability goals and commitment to empowering resilient communities.
