CARLOS Yulo and Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya will return to Manila today to a warm welcome and a courtesy call on President Duterte in Malacanang on Wednesday.
The two were set to immediately return to Tokyo to resume training but were prevailed upon by Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion to make a side trip to Manila.
Accolades came Yulo’s way Sunday, with PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar saying: “We at the PCOO salute the talent and determination to succeed displayed by Carlos Yulo with his gold medal win at the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
“Not only has he done the sport of gymnastics in the Philippines proud, Yulo has also done his country proud by being the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the event.
“It is truly a historic event and we celebrate Yulo’s win with all our fellow Filipinos. We expect great things from this talented young man at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez praised Yulo, saying: “We are thrilled with the golden performance of Yulo at the world champs. President Duterte is happy; Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and (former Special Assistant to the President and) Sen. Bong Go have been monitoring the competition.
“The Office of the President and the PSC family congratulate Caloy on this achievement. Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!”
“We would to congratulate Caloy Yulo and the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines in producing a world champion. His hard work and dedication paid off,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Bambol Tolentino. “His accomplishment should inspire our other athletes to do well in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in December.”
