PHNOM PENH. – Carlos Yulo plucked two medals Monday, one of them a gold, on the first day of the men’s artistic gymnastics event in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games here.
Yulo, 23, won the gold medal in the individual all-around event after scoring 84 points at the Marquee Tent of the National Olympic Stadium.
Yulo and his teammates in the team all-around event — Juancho Miguel Besana, Ivan Cruz, Ace de Leon, Jhon Santillan and Jan Timbang — combined for 305.25 points and finished second behind Vietnam.
Vietnam, which also did the trick in Hanoi last year, scored 313 points for the gold, with Malaysia taking the bronze (295.5).
Vietnam’s Thanh Thung Le finished second in the individual all-around with 80.450 points while another Vietnamese, Phuong Thanh Dinh, took the bronze medal with 78.150 points.
For Yulo, a two-time world champion, the result was worth it considering he and the team only had two weeks to train.
“I’m happy with the result because I had two weeks to prepare. I was able to do it and I’m so thankful,” Yulo said. “Training in Manila helped a lot because it’s so hot here in Cambodia. Our preparation helped us to get ready 100 percent.”
