THE University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is implementing the video challenge system to boost the quality of officiating in the men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments set to start this weekend.
League president Em Fernandez announced the implementation of the technology that will assist the referees in decision-making process yesterday during the launch of the Season 82nd second semester events.
UAAP Volleyball Control Committee president Noreen Go said the challenge system will be patterned after the mechanism used in the 30th Southeast Asian Games last December.
“We’re still finalizing all the details and we will release a memorandum to all schools, all the people involved and the media as well. We want to orient them with the correct rules and the guidelines,” Go said.
This is the first time the league will use the said system that was first introduced in the Philippines in 2015.
Clashing in the opener this Saturday are University of the East and University of the Philippines at 9 a.m., followed by their women’s counterparts at 11 o’clock.
Far Eastern U, last year’s runner-up in the men’s side, takes on University of Santo Tomas at 2 p.m. before the Tigresses and Lady Tamaraws clash.
On Sunday, defending champion Ateneo battles De La Salle University in the women’s main game. National University will also begin its title-retention bid in the men’s division against Adamson.
