“ONYOK” yesterday intensified into a severe tropical storm from a tropical storm as Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands remained under warning signal No. 1, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Onyok is forecast to exit the Philippine area of responsibility tonight.

Weather specialist Raymond Ordinario said PAGASA raised the signal warning because Onyok will be near the Batanes land mass but there is little chance the storm will make landfall.

It is forecast to be some 315 km north northeast of Basco, Batanes today and 900 north of Basco on Tuesday.

Ordinario said scattered light to moderate rains are expected in the Cagayan Valley and Bicol regions.
