‘I sensed that bond between Enzo and Nicole as I was watching them when they were explaining to me how things fell into place… ‘
LAST Friday, two lovebirds tied the knot at a wedding they themselves prepared everything for. From the usual selection of the date, venue and theme, to designing and preparing the very personalized invitations. It’s a type of wedding rarely seen nowadays because most couples opt for convenience – that’s what wedding planners are for.
But these two, whom I’ll hide behind the nicknames Enzo and Nicole, chose to have a direct hand in their biggest day. (As I might have done myself, except that I never had a chance, ha-ha.)
They even had the good taste of asking me to be one of their godfathers!!! When they asked and handed over their beautiful keepsake of a boxed invitation, I immediately said yes. And a week later was ready with a brand-new Barong Tagalog.
Their love story is one I’d love to hear over and over again, especially since I’m jaded about love because I seem to know of two love stories gone sour for everyone that lasts a lifetime.
They’ve known each other for some time since they shared the same college at UP Diliman. But if I remember right, it was a friendship first in the early days (years?) spent studying and enjoying campus life with extracurricular activities and all.
During their college days, I knew the young man as he was part of a student organization that I had collaborated with. During those years, I knew him to be a fun and focused young man like the rest of his friends; but where they differed was in the fact that most of them were as busy with lessons as much as with girls, while Enzo wasn’t that way.
Maybe because he already had his sights on Nicole and was not in the “collect and select” mode.
After they were done with their studies and began work as professionals, they finally took each other seriously, not just as friends but as partners. Listening to their story, I couldn’t help but think of “soulmate” which I wish everyone could have. I define soulmate as someone with whom you have a bond in a way that transcends the usual characterizations of bonds or ties between two people. It is a connection not necessarily romantic and not even sexual but yes, there is a deep affection in the connection. And, in my book, it could even be a bond between members of the same sex as much as of the opposite sex.
I sensed that bond between Enzo and Nicole as I was watching them when they were explaining to me how things fell into place leading up to the big day. I must confess that I was listening to them feeling a mixture of joy and envy. Sanaol, as some young kids say.
Now, my deepest regret is that “Kristine” wrecked all my plans to attend the big day, and I was told that many others also failed to make it as a result – but I take solace in the knowledge that for Enzo and Nicole not even “Kristine” could stand in their way and keep them from celebrating this day of all days. And the pictures they’ve shared show it. You can see it in their eyes. The connection of soulmates.
Hmmm. Ever the optimist, maybe I’ll find mine on November 2!
