WHILE dogs and cats are the most common source of rabies, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reminded the public that it may also come from other animals.

In a televised public briefing, DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said: “It’s not just from dogs and cats. Rabies may also come from other mammals. Even cows, sheep, and other farm animals can transmit rabies.”

As of the latest tally, there were 67 rabies cases reported nationwide from January 1 to March 8.

“This is 31 percent lower compared to the 97 cases recorded during the same period last year,” said Domingo.

Rabies is a viral infection that can be transmitted to humans through animal bites or scratches, most commonly by dogs and cats.

Its symptoms include fever, headache, and general weakness, before progressing into anxiety, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, and hydrophobia.
