THE newly-refurbished Rizal Memorial Coliseum will host several events this year.

“There are a lot of events lined up in our calendar and we are excited to host them here inside this historical coliseum,” said Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez.

Last December, the coliseum hogged the limelight as one of the major venues for the Southeast Asian Games months after its renovation. In all, it hosted five sports disciplines,

including gymnastics, where world champion Carlos Yulo shone.
The 6,100 seating indoor arena used to be the main hub for the UAAP, NCAA, and the defunct MICAA.

This month, the PSC will celebrate its 30th year and as another milestone unfolds in the agency’s story, it intends to organize a simple but meaningful celebration at the coliseum.

“This is a milestone for PSC. As we celebrate our 30th year, we want it to be inside the Rizal Coliseum which has seen many significant events in Philippine Sports,” said Ramirez.

Aside from the PSC’s 30th anniversary, the agency is also planning to hold the Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games this year at the RMSC and at the Philsports Complex in Pasig.  If this pushes through, it will be the first time the Batang Pinoy would be held in Manila.

The fourth enshrinement ceremony for the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame is also being considered to be staged in the coliseum. The event will honor another batch of Filipino sports greats on Nov. 27.
