MISS Philippines Earth 2021 kicked off with the virtual presentation of its 68 official candidates last Monday, setting a record this year for the most number of contestants in the 21-year history of the advocacy-driven pageant that will select the country’s rightful delegate to the 21st Miss Earth Pageant later this year.

Some 200 ladies, each armed with her own advocacy concerning the protection of the environment, signed up online. The week-long series of screenings with panelist from different sectors was concluded last Saturday where this columnist sat in the panel for the last batch of applicants.

While the other major national pageants cancelled their searches last year due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Miss Philippines Earth continued with its search virtually, setting new standards in pageantry in the new normal. Lorraine E. Schuck, executive vice president of Carousel Productions which runs the pageant, said the search had to push through virtually for the second straight year so that “our cause for Mother Earth continues uninterrupted.”
