AFTER a tough round of test drives at the Sodegaura Forest Raceway last December, the final voting for the Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) for 2024-2025 was done and the runaway winner with 220 points is a hybrid Japan Domestic Model (JDM) minivan, the Honda Freed.
Taking second spot with 196 points in the Mazda CX-80 SUV, and third place goes to the Mini Cooper with 172. The Honda CR-V e:FCEV received the Technology Award for its innovative hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology and Mazda’s e-Skyactiv R-EV rotary technology was honored with a Special Award from the steering committee.
The Mitsubishi Triton won the Design Award, edging out the BYD Seal by just one vote.
The all-electric BYD Seal was selected as one of the “Top Ten Best Models,” the first Chinese vehicle brand to break into the Top 10 of JCOTY. This year, the BYD Seal got 32 points finishing in eighth place.
The first non-Japanese brand to win the award in Japan was the Volkswagen Golf in 2013. While the Jeep Cherokee in the first American brand which won a spot in 2014. The Seal is not the first Chinese car to win an award in the strict and stringent Japanese car market.
Contrary to reports in some publications, the Seal is not the first Chinese car to receive and accolade from a Japan car-awards giving body. In March 2024, the BYD Dolphin received the top “Grand Prix” awards at the 2023 Japan EV of the Year awards, and the BYD ATTO 3 ranked third. This marked the first time a Chinese carmaker received such accolades in Japan.
According to the press information released, the Honda Freed emerged victorious among 59 of the Japan’s top automotive journalists who were part of the testing team, because its design emphasizes practicality, with features such as a flexible seating arrangement and advanced safety technologies, including the Honda Sensing, which enhances driver assistance and safety.
The Mazda CX80 meanwhile stands out with its sleek lines and modern aesthetics, appealing to consumers seeking both style and functionality. The CX-80 is equipped with advanced engine technology that balances performance and efficiency, making it a strong competitor in the market. Jurors noted its excellent handling and ride comfort, which contributed to its high ranking in this prestigious competition.
The Mini Cooper was recognized as the Import Car of the Year aside from placing third in the contest. The retro charm with modern engineering, offering a spirited driving experience. Its compact size makes it ideal for urban environments, while its customizable features allow owners to express their individuality.
