PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has vetoed a measure declaring Pampanga as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines,” Malacanang said on Thursday.

Communications Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro said passage of the bill would be discriminatory as each region in the country has unique features that it could offer.

“This was vetoed because we do believe that Pampanga has delicious food and rich culture, but we want to recognize the whole region and all that it can offer,” Castro said.

In a letter to the Senate and the House of Representatives, dated March 12, the President said he is vetoing Senate Bill No. 2797 and House Bill No. 10634 titled “An act declaring the province of Pampanga as the culinary capital of the Philippines.”

Marcos said while Pampanga’s culinary contributions are widely recognized, designating it as the official culinary capital of the country could undermine the diversity of Philippine cuisine.

“I cannot ignore the concerns regarding the declaration’s lack of historical basis, the absence of a thorough study that shows key performance indicators for such designation, and the possibility that the bill may offend sensibilities in other provinces that are equally proud of their culinary contributions,” the President said.

He added that Filipino cuisine reflects the country’s cultural and geographic diversity, shaped by the distinct culinary traditions of its regions.

Marcos said each region contributes their indigenous dishes with certain recipes that are best done in the areas of origin of their ingredients.

He said the government remains committed to its policy to “conserve, promote, and popularize the nation’s historical and cultural heritage and resources, as well as artistic creations.”
