The ART LOUNGE MANILA, in cooperation with Fundacion Sanso, presents “Juvenal Sanso: Jubilation!” to mark the Presidential Medal of Merit Awardee’s 90th birthday. The exhibit opens on November 19 at the Art Lounge in The Podium, presents around forty works which mark each decade of Sanso’s more than 70-years long career.
A prolific printmaker, painter, scenographer, textile designer, photographer, and sculptor; Sanso has exhibited in Spain, France, the UK, the USA, and Mexico, aside from the Philippines, where he grew up in.
His paintings are likewise collected in museums in Madrid and in Paris, where he spent more than 50 years of his life, residing there for part of the year, and during winters there, in milder Manila. For his contributions to the art scene there, Sanso has dubbed a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the government of France. Spain has also awarded him the Cross of Isabela, to honor his accomplishments.
Here in the Philippines, where the Filipino-at-heart artist has resided for most of his life, and has decided to retire in, he is known for his seascapes and floral paintings, as well as his earlier expressionist renditions of the barong-barong and baklad, which he made famous in Europe and America.
The first artist to present an all-print exhibition in 1957, Sanso has pioneered many art forms including cameraless photographs and painted Kodachrome slides. Many of these, and some of his important works, can be found in the museum created to preserve and protect his legacy — the Fundacion Sanso, which is in San Juan City.

With many works fetching six figures in recent auctions, there has been surge of interest in his works that Sanso’s paintings which made them scarce and hard to come by. “Juvenal Sanso: Jubilation!” presents a unique opportunity for collectors to get a hold of his works, or for the art enthusiast to have an idea of the breadth of the body of work by this important international artist.
