The country’s mobile and fixed broadband internet speeds have improved in March compared to the prior month, according to the latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index report.
In a statement, Ookla said the fixed broadband median speed improved to 90.57 megabits per second (Mbps) in March from 90.03 Mbps in February.
Mobile median speed also improved as the country yielded a download speed of 25.63 Mbps from the 24.58 Mbps registered the month before.
The latest download speed represents an improvement of 19.7 percent and 23.6 percent, respectively, since July 2022.
The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said ensuring the improvement of internet speed remains a priority as President Marcos asked telecommunications companies to support expediting the digitalization of small businesses and government services, noting the Filipinos’ massive use of the internet in every single aspect of life.
The NTC added the steady improvement of internet speed also complements President Marcos’ Executive Order 18 directing the establishment of green lanes for strategic investments in all government agencies.
The order also directs the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to make available to local government units the software for the computerization of the business permit and licensing system, with the help of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
In a related development, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the DICT have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for E-Governance.
The partnership will ensure faster, more streamlined and convenient delivery of services to its stakeholders nationwide.
Under the MOU, the existing applications and systems of the DPWH will be integrated with the DICT. DPWH will guide DICT on its processes to ensure the interoperability of their respective systems and application.
In coordination with DPWH, the DICT will also study, evaluate and facilitate the development of additional applications and systems, if needed.
