Inspiration for fashion designers can come in different forms. Some draw from personal experiences. Others, creating fashion lines that pay tribute to nature. For Mitch Desunia’s latest collection, it is the Filipino spirit taken into the global context.
Desunia is no stranger to the fashion world having put up her first atelier Mitch Desunia Haute Couture on March 15, 2009, which specialized in affordable couture bridal gowns.
The company was later on incorporated in 2015 and became Mitch Desunia Apparel Inc.
Since then, three more brands have been created, namely Madame Moiselle Desunia (MODE), a brand that provides high-street fashion pieces for men, ladies and kids and available at select Finds Finds stores nationwide; IDo Manila that provides quality occasion dresses, available at select Robinsons Department Stores nationwide, and Desunia Beauty Essentials for cosmetics, available online or at the direct sellers and select health and beauty stores nationwide.
Desunia recently produced its second fashion show called CARSXCOUTURE, the Mitch Desunia 2020 Collection, a production aimed to show Filipinos what Europeans frequently witness during their fashion weeks.
The highlight of the show was the Entwined collection which showcased Inabel, an exquisitely decorated fabric produced from the province of Ilocos, hand-made by local weavers. However, due to the weavers’ dwindling numbers caused by low demands resulting in even lower income, the art that produces Inabel may be lost entirely through time. Desunia decided to highlight Inabel this year, to show the world that Filipino craftsmanship is capable of competing globally, in terms of design and durability.
With Mitch Desunia’s revolutionary designs and her being selective when it comes every fabric that she uses, the Inabel fabric transcending its tribal roots and embracing a new form when fused with imported fabrics, producing an array of outfits with wild textures in a modern cut.
