Apex Mining has formalized the Apex Mining Professorial Chair – one each in Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering – through the UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (UPERDFI).

“The Apex Mining professorial chairs not only help boost our professors’ track records; they also provide new learnings or validate past discoveries. More importantly, the research that will be done through these professorial chairs will enrich and grow our country’s body of knowledge about mining and related sciences, which we can also share with the mining industries in different parts of the world,” said Luis Sarmiento, Asean Eng. Apex Mining president and chief executive officer.

Apex Mining, with its mine sites in Maco, Davao de Oro and Itogon, Benguet, has always subscribed to research-driven solutions to ensure that its operations are aligned with sustainability principles.

One of its current initiatives is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by improving energy efficiency and adopting low-carbon emission technologies. Toward this end, the company is largely guided by the GHGs reduction and management plan derived from the results of the study undertaken by University of Southeastern Philippines.

In stabilizing their underground tunnels, they enhanced the shotcrete technique by developing their own mix of concrete, formulated through their own research and based on the conditions unique to the Maco Mine site’s underground.

The Apex Mining Professorial Chairs are among the many ways that UPERDFI pushes its mission to generate science for the people.
