THE Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) yesterday assured the public that they can avail of treatment for rabies if they are bitten by dogs and cats.

The Department of Health reported that 55 rabies cases were reported nationwide from January 1 to March 1, with all cases resulting in death.

In a statement, PhilHealth president and chief executive officer (P/CEO) Edwin Mercado said those at risk of rabies may avail of the Animal Bite Treatment (ABT) package.

“We encourage the public to not hesitate to seek treatment for animal bites,” said Mercado.

Rabies is a viral infection that can be transmitted to humans through animal bites or scratches, most commonly by dogs and cats.

Its symptoms include fever, headache, and general weakness, before progressing into anxiety, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, and hydrophobia.

“The ABT package can be availed of in over 700 accredited service providers nationwide. Its cost recently increased to P5,850 from the previous P3,000,” Mercado said.

The amount covers essential post-exposure prophylaxis, including rabies vaccine and rabies immune globulin for immediate protection; local wound care; tetanus toxoid and anti-tetanus serum; antibiotics; and supplies, which include syringes, alcohol, and antiseptics.
