MALACANANG yesterday congratulated Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala for her latest victory in the WTA 1000 Miami Open tournament that powered her to the semifinals. Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Eala’s 6-2,7-5 victory against world No. 2 Iga Swiatek of Poland in the quarterfinals brought honor to the country.
“This is a victory for Filipinos. Malacañang, the Palace, the President is proud of Filipinos who bring honor to the Philippines,” she said.
Eala, ranked 140th in the world, is expected to crash the top 100 of the Women’s Tennis Association rankings after her brilliant run in the tournament that included earlier victories over former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and reigning Australian Open queen Madison Keys of the US.
