Growing up, Christmas wasn’t really a good time for me, as I would be confined at home due to asthma and fever. While I had my good years, I often would be curled up on the couch with a warm blanket, a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows, and a good holiday movie -thanks to our family owning a video-rental shop back in the day. Here are some of what I think (disclaimer – I’m no expert, just someone who watched one too many films) are some of the best films that are sure to get you into the festive spirit. So, grab your favorite snacks and dive into this cinematic sleigh ride!
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Considered the gold standard for holiday classics – Frank Capra’s masterpiece follows George Bailey (played by the charming Jimmy Stewart), a man who feels overwhelmed by life’s pressures on Christmas Eve. Just when he’s about to give up on hope, an angel shows him how much he has positively impacted others. This film reminds us that every life is valuable and that love and community are what truly matter. Grab the tissues – it’s a tearjerker!
Love Actually (2003)
This movie has an ensemble cast (Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, and the list goes on) with a killer soundtrack to boot! Love Actually weaves together multiple love stories set against the backdrop of London during the holiday seasons. It explores love in all its forms – romantic, familial, and platonic – reminding us that love is all around us and its what makes the holidays special.
Die Hard (1988)
Bruce Willis stares as NYPD office John McClane who finds himself battling terrorists led by Alan Rickman at a Los Angeles skyscraper during a Christmas party. This movie has sparked endless debates and spawned memes – it has a mix of suspense, humor, and holiday cheer, making it definitely a Christmas movie! And if you watch this just after Love Actually, you’ll rightly feel Alan Rickman got what he deserves for what he did to Emma Thompson!
Ang Tanging Ina (2003)
This beloved Filipino comedy-drama tells the story of Ina Montecillo (Ai-Ai delas Alas), a single mom juggling life with her 12 children after losing three husbands in rather comedic ways. As she navigates financial struggles and family chaos, Ina takes on every job imaginable just to provide for her kids. This film beautifully captures the essence of motherhood, resilience, and the importance of family ties – not just over the holidays but all year round. Expect laughter, tears, and plenty of relatable moments that will warm your heart.
Home Alone (1990)
A parent’s worst nightmare but every kid’s secret dream – who can forget the antics of Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin)? Left home alone during Christmas vacation, Kevin must defend his house from two bumbling burglars with an arsenal of creative traps. Not only is this family comedy laugh-out-loud funny, but also heartwarming, reminded us of the importance of family and home.
Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
I had the read-along book, but to watch Mickey and friends retell Charles Dicken’s classic tale was really a true delight! Scrooge McDuck plays Ebenezer Scrooge, while Mickey Mouse takes on the role of Bob Cratchit. This charming adaptation introduces children to the timeless story while delivering valuable lessons about generosity and kindness—all wrapped up in delightful animation and memorable music.
Scrooged (1988)
This Bill Murray-starrer is a modern take on Charles Dicken’s classic. Murray plays Frank Cross, a cynical television executive who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve as he prepares for a live broadcast of “A Christmas Carol.” This hilarious yet poignant film explores themes of redemption and the true spirit of Christmas amidst corporate greed and commercialism (something which is much needed these days, IMO). With Murray’s signature humor and memorable supporting performances from the cast, “Scrooged” has become one of my favorites that balances laughter with heartfelt moments.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
This Tim Burton-produced film has earned a cult following and rightfully so! The film took over three years to make because of its stop-motion nature but it was totally worth it! The whimsical blend of Halloween and Christmas magic features Jack Skellington as he discovers Christmas Town and attempts to bring its joy back to Halloween Town. With unforgettable songs and stunning visuals, this film has become a beloved holiday staple for all ages.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
While my folks may have enjoyed the 1966 animated version, I, as an adult, enjoyed Jim Carey’s take on the Grinch. This green, grouchy creature lives in isolation on Mount Crumpit, overlooking the cheerful town of Whoville. He despises Christmas and the joyful Whos who celebrate it with enthusiasm and cheer. His heart is two sizes too small, and he plots to ruin their holiday by stealing everything associated with Christmas. But love, friendship, and community save the day, and in turn, grows the Grinch’s heart, making him embrace the true spirit of the season.
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
It’s like the super hero movie of the holidays – this animated adventure from DreamWorks feature legendary figures like Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), and the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) team up with Jack Frost (Chris Pine) to protect children from Pitch Black (Jude Law), an evil spirit who aims to engulf the world in darkness. With stunning animation and a heartwarming message about belief and friendship, “Rise of the Guardians” is perfect for family viewing during the holidays.
Bonus: Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles (2012)
I love me a really good horror – and this action -comedy horror film directed by Erik Matti is just *chef’s kiss* for me. soon-to-be-father Makoy (Dingdong Dantes) must protect his pregnant wife from an onslaught of aswang monsters—horrific creatures from Filipino folklore that crave newborns. As they battle against these man-eating beings and their supernatural powers, Makoy and his friends find themselves in a comedic yet intense fight for survival. I just love watching this movie any chance I get, and Christmas is no exception.
And with that, you now all know what I’ll be doing over the holiday break (along with catching some of the MMFF entries!), Merry Christmas everyone!
