Integration of Distributed Control System and facilities enables cost reductions, more sustainable production and helps mitigate operational risks in the production of secondary battery materials
ROCKWELL Automation, Inc. (NYSE: ROK), the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, has completed the construction of an automated Distributed Control System (DCS) control system for a secondary battery recycling plant of POSCO HY Clean Metal, the battery recycling business of POSCO. This marks the first implementation of Rockwell Automation’s PlantPAx 5.0 DCS-based process automation in Korea, which is expected to improve productivity, sustainability, and quality at the plant.
Rockwell Automation supplied automation solutions and software for the secondary battery recycling plant of POSCO HY Clean Metal that specializes in extracting lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese from black mass made from spent batteries to supply cathode materials and more recently helped complete the construction of a battery recycling system to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles (EV) and high-capacity cathode materials. Rockwell Automation integrated PlantPAx 5.0 DCS and equipment to enable in-plant automation and established a production environment and system that reduces lifecycle costs and overall risks for operations by reducing the manufacturing footprint, supporting project consistency, streamlining workflows, and providing scalable analysis. The companies expect that the system will contribute to building a value chain for the stable supply of cathode materials that meet the needs of EV battery manufacturers and securing key raw materials for sustainable production of secondary batteries.
“As the battery market continues to grow due to the increasing demand for EVs, the market for recycling spent batteries is also becoming increasingly important and rapidly expanding. We are proud to play a key role in the construction of the POSCO HY Clean Metal’s secondary battery recycling plant,” said Yong-ha Lee, regional director, Rockwell Automation Korea. “Rockwell Automation has the specialized automation solutions and expertise needed for the secondary battery industry and spent battery recycling projects, and we will continue to support the development of the local industry.”
