IN JUNE 2023, BlueFloat Energy formally launched its operations in the Philippines, signaling a major push to harness the country’s untapped offshore wind potential. With four planned projects located in Central Luzon, North Luzon, South Luzon, and Southern Mindoro, BlueFloat aims to generate a combined capacity of 7.6 GW.

These strategically chosen sites offer ideal conditions for offshore wind energy generation, bolstered by the country’s growing energy demands and robust economic growth. The projects mark one of the largest renewable energy undertakings in the country to date.

The Philippines plays a critical role in BlueFloat Energy’s broader Asia-Pacific strategy, which includes projects in Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand. The Philippine government’s support for renewable energy, particularly under President Marcos’ administration, has been instrumental in attracting BlueFloat’s investment. According to the World Bank, the country holds vast wind energy potential–estimated at 178 GW–making it a prime location for offshore wind farms. BlueFloat views the Philippines as a gateway for future clean energy projects across the region.

In addition to clean energy production, BlueFloat emphasizes the importance of environmental protection and community engagement. The company has committed to working closely with local stakeholders, ensuring that its offshore wind projects have positive impacts on nearby communities. This includes generating employment, enhancing infrastructure, and involving local governments in the planning and execution phases. BlueFloat’s approach ensures that the benefits of offshore wind extend beyond clean energy, fostering local economic development

BlueFloat’s experience in other markets, such as Taiwan, has provided valuable lessons for its operations in the Philippines. In Taiwan, the company is involved in the “Winds of September” project, a 1 GW offshore wind initiative. Similar projects in the Philippines are expected to face comparable challenges, including environmental assessments and infrastructure upgrades. However, the knowledge gained from projects in Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand will likely support the development of BlueFloat’s Philippine ventures, ensuring smoother execution.

As BlueFloat Energy continues to expand its clean energy footprint globally, the Philippines is poised to become a central hub in its renewable energy strategy. The company’s projects are not only expected to transform the country’s energy landscape but also to stimulate local economies, solidifying BlueFloat’s role as a leader in offshore wind development.
