CARLOS Yulo led the top achievers in the month of October after atoning for his Tokyo Olympic struggles with an impressive showing in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
After falling short in his medal bid in the Summer Games, Yulo, 21, beamed with pride by taking the gold in men’s vault while bagging the silver in the parallel bars of the World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.
The two medals enabled Yulo to redeem himself from failing to defend his title in men’s floor exercise, his pet event, where he finished fifth with 14.566 points after being deducted for landing out of bounds.
Back home, the TNT Tropang Giga capped off the PBA Philippine Cup by winning its first championship since 2015.
The Tropang Giga finished off the Magnolia Pambansang Manok in five games, allowing the Manny V. Pangilinan-owned franchise to end a streak of 11 straight championship by teams from San Miguel Corporation.
Rookie Mikey Williams capped off his first conference in the league by winning the PBA Press Corps Finals Most Valuable Player.
October didn’t end without another triumph overseas as Jonas Sultan won the vacant World Boxing Organization intercontinental bantamweight crown.
Sultan scored a unanimous decision victory over the favored Carlos Caraballo of Puerto Rico in a 10-round fight at Hulu Theater inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.
It was Sultan’s 18th win in 23 professional fights.
