GYMNAST Carlos Edriel Yulo, trackster Eric Shawn Cray, and swimmer James Deiparine lead the list of huge beneficiaries of the generosity of President Duterte, who announced last Tuesday that he would be giving additional cash incentives to all of the country’s medalists.

Under the new incentives law, Republic Act 10699, each individual gold medal won in the SEA Games is worth P300,000, silver, P150,000, and bronze, P60,000, with athletes in team events getting a corresponding share of the bonuses depending on the size of their respective squads.

Delighted by the performance of Team Philippines, Duterte said he would give extra bonuses of P250,000, P150,000, and P100,000, for the gold, silver and bronze medal winners, respectively, on top of the P300,000 the Philippine Olympic Committee will give to the gold medalists.

The medalists will pay a courtesy call at Malacanang on Dec. 18 to receive their cash incentives from the government while the gold medalists will receive their bonuses a day earlier from the POC during its Christmas party at the Conrad Hotel.

Yulo, who got a P1 million bonus for winning the floor exercise gold in the world gymnastics championships in Stuttgart, Germany, last October, will be rewarded with a whopping P3.2 million for the two gold and three silver medals he won in his SEA Games debut at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Cray, who retained the men’s 400-meter hurdles, won a gold in the 4×100-meter mixed relay and a bronze in the 4×100-meter men’s relay races, is set to receive over P2 million for his achievements at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

Fil-Am Deiparine will get P1.1 million for the gold and silver in the men’s 100-meter and 50-meter breaststroke events, respectively, he won at the New Clark City Aquatics Center in Capas, Tarlac, which will be the venue of next year’s swimming championships.

All of the 14 gold medalists in arnis, which made a big comeback at the games that served as an early boost in the country’s successful bid to clinch overall honors in the meet for the second time, will each receive P850,000.

This amount will also be given to each member of the 10 dancesport pairs that won the gold medals at the Royal Royce Hotel inside the Clark Freeport  Zone in Angeles, Pampanga.

“Our athletes gave their all and they deserve all the respect and care that we can give them, as kababayans and as a nation. You all made us proud. Salamat sa inyong sakripisyo, tiyaga at pagpupursigi,” PSC chairman Butch Ramirez said yesterday.
