TABLE tennis players Linard Sultan and Mary Eloise Sable added a silver and bronze medal, respectively, last Sunday as the national youth para squad capped its most successful outing in the 4th Asian Youth Paralympic Games in Manama, Bahrain.
Combining with campaigners from Kuwait and Singapore, Sultan picked up his second silver in the men’s mixed team after copping runner-up honors in the men’s single class 8 competitions last Saturday in the meet that drew 700 athletes from 30 Asian countries.
A native of Davao Oriental, Sable, 20, also contributed to the national cause by bagging a bronze in the women’s mixed team event, teaming up with a player from Malaysia.
Runner Daniel Enderes delivered the second silver in track and field by placing second in the men’s 1,500-meter T20 race to go with the silver won by Ronn Russel Mitra in the men’s 400-meter T20 event last Saturday.
Swimmer Angela Mae Otom of Olongapo City, Zambales emerged from the pool with a bronze medal in the women’s 100-meter butterfly S1-10 multi-class for the team’s final medal in the competition.
Their trip was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Swimmer Ariel Joseph Alegarbes stood out as the most bemedalled athlete among the national standard-bearers with one gold and two silver coming from a victory in the men’s 100-meter butterfly S14 event and second-place finishes in both the 100-meter backstroke and breaststroke events, respectively.
The Pinoy campaigners will bring home one gold, six silver and two bronze medals for their best performance ever in the meet. They surpassed the national team production of a lone bronze in the 2017 edition of the AYPG held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and a haul of one gold, one silver and five bronzes from the 2013 staging of the sportsfest in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The national Under-23 men’s basketball squad wound up with a 2-4 win-loss record in the seven-team round robin elimination series, posting victories over Brunei (37-31) and Jordan (57-39).
