Young Pinoy chess players shine in Bangkok

ELLE Castronuevo ruled the girls 8-under division of the rapid event of the 6th Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championships last week in Bangkok, Thailand.

A Grade 3 student at the Imus Pilot Elementary School, Castronuevo, 8, swept her seven matches to bring home the bacon.

Fellow Caviteño Daren dela Cruz of Dasmarinas shared the limelight with an unblemished 7-0 record in topping the combined girls 12 and 14-under rapid event while Mary Janelle Tan and Glassea Ann Hilarior the won silver and bronze, respectively, in the girls 10-under division.

Other Filipino medalists were Caleb Royce Garcia (boys 8-under, silver; John Cyrus Borce, boys 14-under, silver; Christian Gian Karlo Arca, boys 14-under, bronze; and Janmyl Dilan Tisado, boys 18-under, silver.

Supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the junior players took home three gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals from the tournament.
