UNIVERSITY of the Philippines sent University of the East packing with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-17 victory yesterday and extended its winning ways in the 87th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Fighting Maroons picked up a back-to-back victory at the expense of the Lady Warriors with outside spiker Joan Monares propelling the squad with 15 points while Irah Jaboneta had an all-around outing of 13 markers, nine digs and eight excellent receptions.
Middle blockers Kassy Doering and Nina Ytang chipped combined for 15 points for UP in the hour and 23-minute showdown.
With the triumph, the Maroons climbed to solo fifth with a 5-5 record, behind only fourth-ranked University of Santo Tomas (5-4). UE remained winless in 10 matches.
The Katipunan-based belles came into the match on a high following a huge victory against defending champion National University last Wednesday.
“Medyo magulo, medyo magulo iyong galaw ng team ngayon. So, maraming errors iyong kalaban kaya nagkataon, we got the game. Pero sa amin, kulang. Kulang (pa),” UP coach Benson Bocboc said. “So, siguro medyo shaky pa noong umpisa pero darating iyong time… kasi second round na, hindi na puwede iyong ganoon na shaky. Maraming inconsistencies sa pasa, sa free ball, sa setting, so sa lahat.
“Hopefully, next game, mas ma-organize pa namin iyong ginagawa namin. Panalo is panalo but the opponent’s errors… how many? So, ang dami. Hindi lang kami, kasi iyong kalaban mismo ang tumulong para magbigay sa amin ng panalo,” he added.
