NO surprise here.
As expected, Capital1 tabbed UAAP three-time MVP Bella Belen as the top overall pick in the PVL rookie Draft last Sunday night at the Novotel Manila Araneta City.
Aiming to make things go their way after struggling for three straight conferences, the Solar Spikers are raring to rise with Belen, a three-time UAAP MVP and champion from the National University, leading the way.
Belen was absent during the proceedings, currently playing for the Alas Pilipinas women’s national volleyball team in the AVC Women’s Volleyball Nations Cup in Vietnam.
Capital1 team owners Milka and Mandy Romero were understandably elated no end, calling Belen, 22, a franchise maker.
“Definitely, this is a new era and new energy sa franchise namin. Alam naman na si Bella Belen is a franchise maker, game changer po talaga siya and we will really take care of her and the fans who will be now fans of Capital1. Maraming, maraming salamat po sa patuloy na pag-suporta sa team namin ng sister ko and I hope we make you all proud din,” Milka Romero said.
Mandy added: “Talagang pivotal moment for Capital1. So, we thank all the fans for joining us in this journey and really more to expect from Capital1 and getting bigger and brighter.”
Belen, in a short video message, expressed her utmost gratitude to the Solar Spikers as she looked forward to playing in the pro ranks.
“First of all, nagpapasalamat po ako sa buong management ng Capital1, sa Romero family, coach Jorge (Souza de Brito), maraming salamat po sa tiwala na ibinigay ninyo sa akin to be part of your team,” Belen said. “Matagal ko na pong pinangarap na maging professional volleyball player. Kahit na wala sa Novotel for Draft tonight, because I’m fighting for the flag with the national team, nandiyan ako in spirit, and my spirit is very proud sa lahat po ng ma-dra-draft tonight.
“I’m very excited na makapaglaro sa PVL and for Capital1. For gold and blue to yellow and blue. Parang walang nagbago. Salamat po ulit and see you soon.”
