San Beda dampens Lyceum’s F4 hopes

SAN Beda University is down in the standings but the Lady Red Spikers landed a big fish yesterday, outlasting Lyceum of the Philippines University in a thrilling five-setter 25-14, 22-25, 21-25, 25-13, 16-14 in the 100th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Another squad buried in the standings, Emilio Aguinaldo College, returned to the win column at the expense of also-ran Jose Rizal University 11-25, 25-27, 25-17, 27-25, 11-15.

Snapping a two-game slide, the Lady Red Spikers got back against their first-round tormentor with opposite hitter Janelle Bachar dropping a game-high 22 points built on 19 attacks, two service aces and a kill block.

Skipper Reyann Canete and Angel Habacon also contributed for the Mendiola-based crew, with the former tallying 15 points and seven excellent receptions while the latter had a double-double performance of 15 markers and 13 digs.

San Beda posted just its second win in 14 outings while handing Lyceum its eighth loss against six wins, dampening the Lady Pirates’ final four hopes.

Rookie Elizza Alimen propelled the Lady Generals with a double-double outing of career-high 27 points on 24 attacks and 3 service aces and 12 digs. The loss ended EAC’s three-game losing skid and the team rose to 4-10.

The league will have a short break and will return on May 16 at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Sports and Cultural Center in Manila.
