NATIONAL University has arguably one of the best collegiate volleyball programs in the country and as the Lady Bulldogs look to continue to set high standards, the demand for effective and great coaching always looms.
Since 2022, four different coaches have called the shots for NU and propelled the squad to greatness in the UAAP.
Karl Dimaculangan led the Sampaloc-based squad from the 84th and 85th volley wars when it ended a 65-year title drought three years ago, then Norman Miguel took over at the helm in the 86th season in another championship year.
Last season, Sherwin Meneses guided the Lady Bulldogs to their first back-to-back titles.
But last week, NU named Regine Diego as its new tactician, hoping to continue that winning culture for the team.
“Well, I think it’s standards (why there’s a coaching change). These girls demand more time, more things from a coach and sometimes it’s hard to achieve that standard,” Diego said. “So, we’re just looking for the perfect match for the team. Ganoon naman siya. Even for me, we don’t know if I’m still a match for this team.
“Kasi ganoon siya. Just because you went out of NU doesn’t mean you’re not good. It’s just there’s like a perfect match lang talaga na pasok sa system din. Hopefully, I get to be part of this team for longer,” the charming strategist added.
Diego, 35, is no stranger to developing players as she coached several high school teams and became the first female coach in the PVL with the defunct F2 Logistics Cargo Movers in 2023.
