THE NCAA yesterday told College of St. Benilde that its women’s volleyball coach, Jerry Yee, will not be allowed to coach the Lady Blazers because the league prohibits pro coaches and athletes from performing the same job with their college teams.
“The matter is still being studied and vetted by the (NCAA) volleyball committee. So far, there has been an exchange of correspondence between the NCAA volleyball committee and CSB about the specific rules and their applicability. It’s only up to that point still,” NCAA Mancom chair HercCallanta of Season 100 host Lyceum of the Philippines University said yesterday.
The issue was raised by Arellano U recently, days after the Lady Chiefs succumbed to the four-peat-searching Lady Blazers 25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 25-17 in last Thursday’s opener.
Yee coached that match even though he is also the present coach at ZUS Coffee in the Premier Volleyball League, a pro league.
CSB, through its Mancom representative Dax Castellano, had already confirmed receiving the latter and has yet to act on it at present.
Callanta said he believed there is no league rule stating there’s a commensurate punishment for Yee violating an old rule about pro coaches plying their trade in the century-old league.
The Lady Blazers can designate Yee as an assistant coach or a consultant.
