THE Letran Lady Knights extended their reign to three straight years in the sands after trouncing the Lyceum Lady Pirates 21-10, 16-21, 15-13 yesterday in the final of the 100th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales.
Letran’s Gia Maquilang, Lara Mae Silva along with Jogi Maquilang captured the Lady Knights’ fourth overall crown—a morale-booster for the indoor volleyball tourney which is set to begin next week, Feb. 20.
In the final frame, the Letran duo of sophomore Maquilang and graduating player Silva rolled to a 6-1 early lead and eventually reach match point 14-9.
But Lyceum’s Monna Banares and Stacey Lopez didn’t back down just yet as the Lady Pirates pulled to within 13-14.
Both teams displayed their grit and mettle in the final sequence of the match with a long rally but a loaded smash from Maquilang finished the duel and brought Letran to the Promised Land.
Letran tied the Perpetual Lady Altas in the overall titles with four diadems each.
The San Beda Lady Red Spikers, on the other hand, cruised past the Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals in the battle for third with a 21-17, 12-21, 15-10 finish.
In men’s play, the EAC Generals took home the men’s beach volleyball title after sweeping the College of St. Benilde Blazers 21-16, 21-16.
