EMILIO Aguinaldo College stunned Mapua University yesterday, scoring a 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 victory in the second round of the 100th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The young Lady Generals avenged their first-round defeat to the Lady Cardinals, thanks to Alessandra Alimen, who fired 15 points on 13 attacks and two kill blocks.
Lyceum of the Philippines University opened its second round campaign with a hard-earned win over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta 21-25, 25-21, 29-31, 24-14, 15-12.
Outside spiker Joan Doguna dropped a season-high 27 points on 23 attacks, three service aces and a block, and caught 11 digs as Lyceum improved to 4-6.
Also sizzling for the Lady Pirates were Johna Dolorito with a double-double performance of 20 markers and 18 excellent receptions; Jaja Tulang who contributed 14 points and 19 excellent receptions, while Heart Bio and Hiromi Osada added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
“Ang mga bata nag-execute doon sa pinaka best level na kaya nilang ibigay even though may konting injuries pa kami,” Lyceum mentor Cromwel Garcia said after the Lady Pirates picked up their third straight win.
“Ang pagkakaiba siguro noong nakaraang round, determined sila to do things na alam namin kung saan kami papunta. But eventually, ito we gotta make this second round good for us. Ire-recover namin and hopefully, hinahabol parin namin iyong Final Four,” he continued.
Shaila Omipon and Pauline Reyes led the Lady Altas with 19 and 16 points, respectively, while Joyce Uy and Winnie Bedana scored 13 and 11 in the losing effort.
Perpetual absorbed its back-to-back loss since the end of the first round and slipped to 7-3.
Erica Bodonal and Cara Dayanan contributed to the Lady Generals’ cause, with the former chipping in 13 points and five excellent receptions and the latter adding 11 markers and eight digs.
EAC, with its victory, rose to 3-7 while Mapua ended its seven-game winning streak and slipped to 7-3.
Raissa Ricablanca was the lone bright spot for the Lady Cardinals with 11 points.
