ADAMSON University capped its campaign in the 87th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 victory over University of the Philippines yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Record-setter and rookie captain Shaina Nitura led the offensive load with 22 points while adding nine digs and six excellent receptions as the Lady Falcons ended their campaign with a 6-8 card, a big improvement from their measly 3-11 slate last season.

Graduating Mayang Nuique tallied 13 markers, all on attacks, in the one-hour-and-30-minute match.

UP also ended its campaign with a 6-8 mark, compared to 1-13 last season.

“We thank the Lord sa season na ito, sa life din ng mga bata, sa talent na binigay ng Panginoon sa kanila. ‘Yung run namin, late na kami nakakuha ng panalo but still I’m grateful,” said Adamson coach JP Yude.

“I’m very thankful sa Lord na ganito iyong nangyari kasi everything has a purpose. In his perfect time nandun naman kami sa taas,” Yude added.

Nitura, the Rookie of the Year frontrunner, shattered records. She tallied six 30-point performances, including her 38-point outing that eclipsed Ateneo legend Alyssa Valdez and UST’s Sisi Rondina’s 35-point performances in 2013 and 2019, respectively.

She also surpassed the total scoring record for a season for both women’s and men’s tournaments with her 371 overall points this season, previously held by former UST ace Mark Alfafara with 344 in 2014.

“Again, thank you Lord po sa panalo and thank you po sa mga bonus na binibigay niyo. Siguro ang pinaka-highlight ko talaga is iyong panalo namin ngayon kasi talagang teamwork ang nangyari kanina. Talagang lahat kami, pag may hindi na gumana na isa, gumagana iyong isa,” Nitura said.

“Ayun nga, sinabi nga ni ate Mayang na hindi ito iyong last. This is the beginning for another season.”

The Fighting Maroons bid farewell to graduating skipper Nica Celis and one-and-done middle blocker Kassy Doering, who had a point and five markers, respectively.

The Diliman-based crew stunned reigning champions NU Lady Bulldogs, DLSU Lady Spikers and FEU Lady Tamaraws.
