ARELLANO University returned to the win column yesterday, outlasting Mapua University in five sets 26-28, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10 in the 100th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

But the real story of the day was San Beda University, which finally ended its 10-game losing skid by stunning San Sebastian College-Recoletos 21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-13.

The Lady Red Spikers seized their breakthrough win this centennial season with outside spiker Angel Habacon tallying a double-double performance of 25 points and 16 excellent receptions while opposite spiker Janelle Bachar added 20 markers.

Also chipping in for the red-and-white crew were Erin Navarro and skipper Reyann Canete with 12 and 10 markers, respectively, while setter Patricia Hiponia tossed 24 excellent sets.

“akaka-overwhelm kasi nga first win. Sobrang tagal namin talagang hinahantay na makuha ‘yung panalo. Luckily, nakuha namin siya against Baste. Kaya ayun, sobrang sobrang proud talaga,” San Beda interim mentor Joshua Noda said.

San Sebastian slipped to 6-5, spoiling the 23-point outing of Tina Marasigan along with Kath Santos’ 12 markers. The painful loss may have also ended SSC’s hopes of gaining the Final Four through the back door.

Outside spiker Laika Tudlasan dropped 26 points, all on attacks, as Arellano improved to 7-4 in a tie with Perpetual and Mapua. Marianne Padillon added 21 markers.

Freighanne Garcia and Raissa Ricablanca served as the one-two punch for the Lady Cardinals with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
