DEFENDING champion National University was pushed to a tough battle in the third but won nevertheless in straight sets, beating University of the Philippines yesterday 25-13, 25-23, 25-22 and kept the solo lead in the 87th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Veterans Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon delivered as the one-two punch for the Lady Bulldogs with 17 and 16 markers, respectively, with the former also coming up with seven excellent receptions.
Also chipping in for the Sampaloc-based crew was outside spikerVangeAlinsug, with 11 markers and six digs.
With the victory, NU remained at the top with a 5-0 mark while UP absorbed its fourth consecutive loss for a 2-4 slate.
The Lady Bulldogs went into the match having played their last match last March 1 but showed no rust, coming up with 46 attack points to the Lady Maroons’ 38 while scoring eight kill blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs seek their sixth straight victory on Wednesday against the gritty Adamson Lady Falcons at the same venue.
One-and-done middle blocker KassyDoering and opposite spikerKianneOlango led the Nina Ytang-less Fighting Maroons with 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Meanwhile, graduating opposite hitter Solomon confirmed her application for the Korea V-League Asian Quota Draft but affirmed her commitment to the Lady Bulldogs.
