COLLEGE of Saint Benilde launched its bid for a four-peat in the 100th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament yesterday by turning back Arellano University 25-15, 25-12, 24-26, 25-17 at the San Sebastian College-Recoletos gym in Manila.

Former MVP Mycah Go had 17 points and eight digs as the Lady Blazers started their drive without Cloanne Mondonedo, Gayle Pascual, Michelle Gamit and Jade Gentapa, who have all used up their playing years.

Also contributing to the team were Mary Grace Borromeo with 11 markers and seven excellent receptions while veteran middle blocker Zam Nolasco added 10 points.

Lyceum of the Philippines University also opened its campaign on a high note, scoring a 26-24, 25-15, 25-21 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College.

The Lady Pirates, last year’s second runners-up, played without two-time Best Setter Venice Puzon and Joan Doguna due to technical issues, according to coach Crowmwel Garcia, but veteran Jaja Tulang rose to the challenge with 12 points and six excellent receptions.

Johna Dolorito and Heart Bio had a combined 16 markers for the Lady Pirates while Joann De Guzman added seven points and seven digs.

“Two rounds [of eliminations] iyan. Mahaba iyong league. Gusto ko ng playing time for everybody para mag-build up na, kung sino ‘yung kailangan nating ipasok, magagamit natin,” said Benilde mentor Jerry Yee. “Tapos kung sino iyong kailangan natin gamitin, kaya, hindi iyong bago parin sa pakiramdam.”
