DEFENDING champion College of St. Benilde and Letran go for a share of the lead when they clash with lightweight opponents today as second-round action in the 100th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament gets going at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Knights take on the winless Lady Red Spikers of San Beda at 11 a.m. while the Lady Blazers take on the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers in the main event at 2:30 p.m.

Letran and St. Benilde ended the first round in a quadruple-tie at the top with 7-2 win-loss slates in the company of gutsy Mapua Lady Cardinals and the Perpetual Lady Altas.

Letran ended its first-round campaign last April 11 with a morale-boosting win against the San Sebastian College Lady Stags 28-26, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17, thanks to the heroics of last season’s Rookie of the Year Gia Maquilang.

San Beda is hoping for its breakthrough victory in the second round, with power hitter Angel Habacon back on the court.

The Lady Red Spikers absorbed their ninth consecutive loss last April 4, absorbing a 23-25 14-25 25-21 20-25 defeat inflicted by the Lyceum Lady Pirates.

The four-peat-seeking Lady Blazers are bidding to recover from a four-set defeat to the Mapua Lady Cardinals while JRU ended the first round with a five-game skid, counting a 22-25, 17-25, 19-25 loss to Lyceum.

Mycah Go, Wielyn Estoque and Zam Nolasco are eager to battle back for the Lady Blazers and start the second round on a high note while Nicole Deala, Patricia Del Pillar and team captain Karyla Jasareno will lead JRU.

The tournament will now have five game days a week, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
