DE La Salle University bounced back from its heartbreak five-set loss to University of Santo Tomas last week by scoring a 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 25-17 victory over University of the Philippines yesterday in the 87th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Led by former Most Valuable Player Angel Canino who had 24 points, 20 off attacks; four kill blocks, five digs and four excellent receptions, the Lady Spikers evened their card to 2-2 in a tie with the Lady Fighting Maroons.
The Lady Spikers also got 20 markers from opposite hitter Shevana Laput and middle blocker Lilay Del Castilla who had 11 points.
“Wala namang mahinang team ngayon sa UAAP. Lahat talaga macha-challenge ka makalaban sila. Mataas na iyong level ng ginagawa ng bawat team kaya hindi mo pupwedeng sabihing mahina iyong kalaban,” La Salle deputy mentor Noel Orcullo said after the two-hour showdown.
Open spiker Irah Jaboneta had 15 points, 11 excellent receptions and eight digs in the Fighting Maroons’ second straight loss, while Joan Monares tallied 11 markers, nine digs and eight excellent receptions.
This Saturday, La Salle battles UE while UP takes on UST this Wednesday.
