ALAS Pilipinas star Angel Caninocontinued to reap honors for the country, bagging the First Best Outside Spiker award in the first leg of the 5th Southeast Asia (SEA) V.League women’s event over the weekend in Thailand.
The De La Salle University standout bagged her third award after being named the Best Opposite Spiker in the AVC Women’s Challenge Cup last year and the Best Outside Spiker in this year’s AVC Women’s Nations Cup.
Canino helped the national squad win its third straight bronze award in the SEA V.League, beating Indonesia in the battle for third 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-13 last Sunday at Terminal 21 Korat in NakhonRatchasima.
The one-time UAAP champion and Most Valuable Player expressed her gratitude in a social media post, saying, “One step closer, more to chase (Philippine flag emoji)”.
Joining Canino in the Best Outside Hitters accolade was Thai spikerKongyotAjcharaporn, while KokramPimpichaya, also from Thailand, won the MVP award in the three-day competition.
The veteran duo propelled Thailand to the title, beating Vietnam in a thrilling championship duel 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11. This was Thailand’s eighth title in the SEA V.League, having never lost in the championship since 2019.
Nguyen ThiBichTuyen and Nguyen Khanh Dang of Vietnam snagged the Best Opposite Spiker and Best Libero feat, respectively.
Thai NuekjangThatdao and Vietnamese Tran Thu BichThuy were hailed as the Best Middle Blockers, while GuedpardPornpun of Thailand capped the Best Setter to complete the individual awardees.
The second leg of the competition will take place in Indonesia from Aug. 8 to 10.
