5th Southeast Asia (SEA) V.League first leg gets going today, Friday, at Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand.

Alas Pilipinas, currently at 47th in the FIVB World ranking, will be the underdog when it takes on World No. 20 and first leg host Thailand at 6 p.m. (Manila time).

The Jorge Souza de Brito-mentored nationals are gunning to surpass their back-to-back bronze medal finishes last year in two legs of the regional meet, with young stars Bella Belen, Angel Canino, Alyssa Solomon and Shaina Nitura back in the lineup.

Eya Laure, Vanie Gandler, Mars Alba, Dawn Catindig, Justine Jazareno, Thea Gagate, Leila Cruz, Dell Palomata, Fifi Sharma and Clarisse Loresco complete the team seeing action in the three-day competition.

In their last international outing, the national team finished fourth in the 2025 VTV Women’s International Cup in Vietnam last June.

The quartet of Belen, Canino, Solomon and Nitura were not in the Alas list in the VTV Cup, with Filipino-Americans Brooke Van Sickle, MJ Phillips, and Tia Andaya flying the flag.

Thailand will field a team bannered by veterans Ajcharaporn Kongyot, Pimpichaya Kokram, Pornpun Guedpard and Piyanut Pannoy.

This August, the Thais will host the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championships.

After today’s match, Alas Pilipinas will clash with World No. 27 and 2025 AVC Nations Cup title holders Vietnam tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at same venue.

The nationals battle World No. 50 Indonesia on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on the final day of the meet.
