NATIONAL athletes set to return to training today at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and Philsports Complex in Pasig City in preparation for the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games in May will have to wait for a while anew.
PSC Commissioner Ramon Fernandez said the PSC board decided last week to defer the training in the wake of the declaration of Alert Level 3 in the National Capitol Region.
“Most likely the training will be reset towards the end of January. It was supposed to be on January 10 but with NCR placed under Alert Level 3 we have had to push it back. We will have to wait and see how it goes,” Fernandez said.
The PSC issued a directive early last month that the athletes and coaches in the national pool will return to actual workouts today, Jan. 10.
Fernandez, also the national team chief of mission to the Vietnam Games, said PSC national training director Marc Velasco will decide the new training schedule.
“Marc will decide the sports and schedule when they can return to training in most likely a bubble-type training,” Fernandez said, adding the national boxing and karate teams will train at the PSC facility inside the Teacher’s Camp in Baguio City.
He said it’s likely the athletes and coaches will need to undergo swab tests before they are allowed to enter the training bubble. He said he would discuss this with Philippine Olympic Committee President Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.
Among the sports that have gyms at the RMSC are table tennis, taekwondo, judo, wushu, billiards, weightlifting and lawn tennis while swimming, fencing, dancesport and track and field can be held at the Philsports Complex.
