Vietnam, Thailand beat foes

EVEN with star spiker Tran Thi Thanh Thuy sitting out the match to save her power for the quarterfinals, Vietnam still proved too much for South Korea yesterday.

The Vietnamese belles overwhelmed the Koreans 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 to close out their preliminary round stint in the AVC Cup for Women at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

Thu Uyen Nguyen took charge for Vietnam with 13 markers, while Ly Thi Luyen produced a 10-point outing.

Vi Thi Nhu Quynh also chipped in nine points for Vietnam, which finished with a 3-1 card in Pool A of the continental meet.

Five-time winner China remained on top of Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record.

The young Korean team, composed of high school students, remained winless in three games and will have one final shot at a quarterfinals slot when it takes on the Philippines today.

“We’ve seen them play and they played well against the other team (China last Tuesday night). So, our goal is to at least to win against the Philippine team,” South Korea captain Hwang Jimin said through an interpreter.

“We have to focus on their wing players,” she added, referring to aces Diana Mae Carlos, Michele Gumabao and Jema Galanza.

In the second match, Thailand waylaid Chinese Taipei 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 for its second win.

Open hitter Chatchu-On Moksri delivered 16 points for Thailand, while opposite spiker Pimpichaya Kokram had 11 kills.

Thailand improved its mark to 2-1, while Chinese Taipei slid to 1-2 in Pool B.

Kan Ko-Hui and Wu Fang-Yu finished with eight markers each for Chinese Taipei.

Choi Hosun led Korea with eight points, while Kim Seyul contributed seven markers.
