Valdez finishes 44th overall

JAYSON Valdez tallied 612.6 points to finish 44th overall in the men’s 10-meter air rifle qualifiers yesterday and bowed out of contention in the Olympic shooting competitions at the Asaka Shooting Range in Tokyo.

A former Army recruit, Valdez fired rounds of 101.3, 100.5, 101.6, 103.6, 103.5 and 102.1 in the shooting venue located within the headquarters of Japan’s Eastern Army just 15.7 kilometers northwest of Tokyo and failed to make it to the eight top qualifiers advancing to the finals.

China’s Yan Haoran led the way with a new Olympic qualifying record of 632.7 points out of a possible of 640 while Americans Lucas Kozeniesky (631.5) and William Shaner (630.8) were second and third, respectively.

The eight top shooters will start from scratch in the finals scheduled later in the day.
