GIVING it all in his final effort to qualify for the Paris Olympics, Janry Ubas cleared a season-best 7.85 meters to rule the men’s long jump of the Silk Road to Olympic meet in Tashkent, Uzbekistan over the weekend.
Ubas, who won a gold and a silver in the Cambodia Southeast Asian Games in 2023, secured the gold on his second try, with Hong Kong’s Chang Ming Tai (7.75) and Kyrgyzstan’s Timur Iskov (7.42) settling for the silver and bronze, respectively.
It was the final meet of the long jumper as he tried to meet the Olympic qualifying standard of 8.27 meters in the event where 32 slots are up for grabs. He was No. 44 going into the competition held in the Uzbek capital.
Last Sunday, June 30, was the close of the World Athletics qualifying period for the Paris Summer Games, and whether Ubas made it or not will be known when the world track body announces the official qualifiers on July 7.
“We are immensely proud of you (Ubas). Congratulations on your hard work and for proudly representing our country! Be proud of what you accomplished. Onto the next goal, (the) Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games,” the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association said on its Facebook page.
The AIMAG will be held in the Thai capital of Bangkok and Chonburi province from Nov. 21 to 30 this year.
