SUSTAINING his drive to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary next month, Janry Ubas jumped 7.72 meters to top the long men’s long jump in the 16th Trivineto meet in Trieste, Italy early morning yesterday (Saturday night in Europe).

He narrowly defeated Cuba’s Lester Alcid Lescay Gay (7.71) while Bostwana’s Thapelo Monaiwa (7.54) took the bronze medal.

It was the second straight international victory for the Cambodia Southeast Asian Games champion, who also won in the Montonet Grand Prix Lappenenranta in Finland last week.

“Ubas’ latest victory allowed him to earn more qualifying points for the worlds and boosts him up the standings,” athletics secretary general Edward Kho noted.

Ubas, accompanied by national coach Dario de Rosas, needs to finish among the top 36 to qualify for the worlds, with the next release of the rankings by World Athletics to be made tomorrow, according to Kho.
