DISPLAYING vintage form, evergreen Grandmaster Eugene Torre, 71, chalked up nine straight wins to rule the Guam International Open Chess Championship last Friday at the Dusit Beach Resort in Tumon, Guam, the Guam Daily Post reported on its website over the weekend.
Asia’s first GM capped his campaign with a victory over No. 8 seed and candidate master Rogelio Orio in his final match to clinch his first international trophy in a long while.
“I had to be careful because I noticed he (Orio) is an attacking player, so I had to make sure that my defense has no holes, no weaknesses,” said Torre, who also won the 2015 edition of the tournament.
