A TIGHT battle for the general championship still looms in the 84th UAAP season despite the fact that only seven events will be disputed.

League president Emmanuel Calanog of host La Salle said this year could be the chance for other schools to have a shot at bagging the overall crown.

“We will have a general championship. For some of our schools, this may be their chance to actually win a general championship,” Calanog said.

“So, majority of our schools decided that we will award a general championship this year, based on the sports that will be played,” he added.

The league is set to kick off its new season on March 26 with the centerpiece events of men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and cheerdance leading the calendar.

The slate also includes men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball, men’s beach volleyball, poomsae, and men’s and women’s chess.

Calanog admitted not all schools will take part in all sports.

“I think one or two schools indicated that based on their preparations, they can only participate in men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and cheerdance. But one or two lang at the most,” he said. “For those tournaments that used to have all, we’ll probably have six or seven.”
