CAPITAL1 showed up with its A-Game and was rewarded with handsome dividends against a stunned Petro Gazz side last Tuesday night.
The Solar Spikers scored a shocking 26-24, 25-20, 25-18 victory over the Angels for their first win in the PVL Reinforced Conference.
“Masayang masaya ako kasi who would have ever thought na mai-straight (sets) namin (itong game). They are always looking at us as a low-level team,” Capital1 veteran coach Roger Gorayeb said. “Tapos maka-straight set kami ng more experienced team? Malaking bagay sa amin iyon, morale booster sa mga bata ito.
“Nag-prepare talaga kami diyan pero hindi nila ginawa ngayon. But I stuck to our original plan. Naging effective naman kasi ang lakas ng depensa, maski ako nagugulat. Sobrang lakas ng depensa namin. Last time kasi, last game we were struggling sa counterattack namin. Ngayon ‘di kami nag-struggle kaya masaya ako,” he added.
Russian import Marina Tushova powered the Solar Spikers to victory with 24 points while skipper Jorelle Singh and Des Clemente combined for eight markers.
Ace setter Iris Tolenada displayed her exceptional playmaking skills, holding the Solar Spikers together with 15 excellent sets.
A victory like this will only serve Capital1 in good stead, according to Gorayeb, who lauded Tushova for her leadership savvy.
“Happy ako dito sa grupo ng mga players na ito. Marina, after this conference will be leaving but she will be leaving us a good example for the All-Filipino Conference,” he said. “These players will learn many things from Marina, and I hope they learn it and put it in their hearts. Lalakas pa kami.”
