UNIVERSITY of the Philippines began its Shakey’s Super League campaign on a high note by outlasting Perpetual Help 10-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 15-10 yesterday at the Rizal Sports Coliseum in Manila.
Marianne Sotomil led the Fighting Maroons with 18 points, while Ethan Lainne Arce delivered 14 kills.
Kamille Cal contributed 12 markers, while Alyssa Bertolano had 10 points for UP.
“Kanina mixed emotions talaga na parang siyempre first set, ilan lang iyong score natin, second set nakikita ko naman medyo ganoon pa rin, sobrang bagal parin. Good thing, naka-recover naman kami,” new Maroons coach Shaq Delos Santos said.
“Happy siyempre doon sa result naka-survive kami and grabe rin sobrang happy rin ako sa performance ng Perpetual,” he added.
Shaila Allaine Omipon led the Lady Altas with 15 points, Winnie Bedana scored 14 markers, while Jhasmine Sapin and Charisse Mae Enrico added 13 and 10 markers, respectively.
The Lady Altas slid to a 2-1 card in the Pool A bracket of the competition.
In the second game, Adamson University ripped San Sebastian College 25-10, 25-14, 25-18 for its first win.
The Lady Falcons marched into the win column of Pool B with a 1-1 mark, while the Lady Stags suffered their second straight loss in as many matches.
The San Marcelino-based crew bounced back from an opening day loss last Sept. 24 to University of Santo Tomas 20-25, 29-27, 25-15, 27-29, 10-15.
Last Saturday, the Golden Tigresses blanked the Lady Stags 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 followed by a 25-22, 27-22, 25-16 triumph by the Lay Altas over University of the East.
Ateneo also turned back Arellano 25-14, 30-28, 25-1, La Salle nipped FEU 25-13, 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-8.
