THE pre-season battle among collegiate women’s volleyball teams in the country is set for a comeback as Shakey’s Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. (SPAVI) yesterday announced the staging of the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) collegiate pre-season women’s volleyball championship.

The collegiate pre-season meet is back after the popular Shakey’s V-League ran for 13 seasons beginning in 2004.

The SPAVI will lay out the highlights of the tournament in a launching and press conference today at Shakey’s ASEANA on Diosdado Macapagal Ave. in Pasay.

Teams from the NCAA and UAAP have been officially invited.

SPAVI President and CEO Vicente “Vic” Gregorio pointed out that the launching of the SSL in cooperation with ACES, the Athletic Events and Sports Management Group Inc,. “is a reaffirmation of Shakey’s authentic commitment to grassroots and collegiate volleyball.”

Among the teams invited are defending NCAA champion College of St. Benilde and runner-up Arellano University, reigning UAAP titlist National University, and runner-up La Salle.

The Lady Blazers won the crown last month, while the Lady Bulldogs ended their 65-year title drought two months ago.

“It was unfortunate that Shakey’s was forced to temporarily take a leave from the sport which had by then become synonymous with Shakey’s,” Gregorio said.

“But now we are back and with added vigor as we plan to organize a truly national invitational championship that will be rooted among the colleges and students in the 18 regions, 81 provinces and 145 cities all over the Philippines,” he added.

ACES chairman and CEO Dr. Philip Ella Juico and president and COO Dr. Adrian Paolo Laurel expressed their full support for the SPAVI’s grassroots goals and ambitions and stressed SPAVI and ACES are solely centered on primary, secondary, collegiate and student volleyball.

Juico and Laurel also emphasized that they will fully cooperate with the Commission on Higher Education to observe proper protocols and to guard the amateur status of student-athletes as well.
